Recipe

Last Word

Gin, Lime, Chartreuse, Cherry

The original recipe for the Last Word called for equal measures of gin, lime juice, Chartreuse, and maraschino liqueur. In these proportions, most gins tend to get lost behind the other flavors (the cocktail doesn't taste like "a gin drink"). Further, while Chartreuse contributes some sweetness, we also find the overall balance of the original recipe to be aggressively dry. In this build, the proportions are adjusted to allow more of the gin flavor to shone through, and some of the Chartreuse is replaced with simple syrup, which softens the dryness of the lime juice.

First, make sure you've got the right tools for the job:

Next, let's make something delicious!

  • 1½ oz gin
  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice, strained to remove any pulp and seeds
  • ½ oz Green Chartreuse
  • ¼ oz maraschino liqueur
  • ¼ oz simple syrup
  • 1 maraschino cherry

Combine all cocktail ingredients (except the maraschino cherry) with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until chilled and diluted, then double-strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with the maraschino cherry.
